BACKGROUND
Introduction
This website reports the findings of our study called, 'Rural Healthcare Horizons: Insights into Undergraduate Nursing Students’ Career Intentions'. Our aim is to provide valuable insights into the career intentions of nursing students in rural areas, contributing to the advancement of rural healthcare.
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing the intentions of Nursing Education in Southwestern Alberta (NESA) nursing students regarding their decision to pursue employment in rural healthcare settings post-graduation. This research also aims to provide valuable insights into the motivations and considerations of NESA nursing students, contributing to the enhancement of healthcare delivery in rural areas.

How we got here

Our project began when a NESA student expressed their curiosity for understanding contributing factors to the continued nursing shortage they experienced firsthand while working in Southern Alberta.
We also recognize that the NESA program is uniquely placed to connect new nursing graduates to rural healthcare areas who are especially affected by disparities in healthcare access and the shortage of healthcare workers.
As such, our team initiated a research study to better understand the factors that most strongly influence nursing students in the NESA Bachelor of Nursing (BN) and Bachelor of Nursing After Degree (BNAD) programs in their intentions to pursue employment in rural areas.
